Bottom line
Ortovox D3 avalanche beacon has been discontinued by Ortovox in mid-2010. Its replacement comes in a form of enhanced Ortovox Patroller Digital beacon. Also, if you were looking for the D3 you should check out other beacons that were in a similar price range such as BCA Tracker 2 and the new Ortovox 3+.
Use(r) suitability
Ortovox D3 was geared towards novice and less experienced users due to its easy of use. Also, during its time it was quite popular avalanche beacon with rental and recreational operations (cat-skiing, snowmobiling, heli-skiing).
Product description
The Ortovox D3 was very easy to use and had a multiple burial indicator LED light. It was one of the best beacons in terms of price-to-performance ratio.
Ortovox has decided to discontinue it most likely for narrowing its avalanche beacon line and thus combined the best from the D3 and the Patroller beacons into the new Ortovox Patroller Digital.
